Nintendo's 3D Mario for Wii U now has a name - Super Mario 3D World. Previously known as Super Mario for Wii U, the new game draws heavy inspiration and design elements from Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS. 3D World is due out December 2013. Super Mario 3d World was announced during Nintendo's pre-E3 2013 Nintendo Direct on June 11th.
Other additions made to the game are:
- A competitive scoring system has been added to encourage level replay and friendly competition.
- Each character has a special trait. Luigi jumps higher, Peach can float and Toad runs the fastest.
- Pipes are now transparent and players can control their character inside the pipe.
- Touching a moving object/enemy on the Wii U GamePad will cause that object/enemy to freeze in place.
- Super Mario 3D World can be played entirely with the Pro Controller.
Why Didn't Nintendo Make Another Galaxy Game?
Super Mario 3D World is being developed by Nintendo EAD, the Super Mario Galaxy studio. It would have made logical sense then to induct the franchise onto the next-gen platform, but the team wanted to emphasize the 4-player local (only) gameplay.
Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and Director Koichi Hayashida told IGN that when Super Mario 3D Land was in development, they believed a multiplayer element would be a fantastic addition to that style of game. Though the concept didn't make it into that 3DS game, they believed the power of Wii U would allow them to fully realize those mechanics.
Despite Super Mario 3D World having its roots in 3D Land, Nintendo EAD's Hayashida and Koizumi stressed that they are drawing from all corners of Mario's action genre legacy. Bringing Princess Peach's floating ability back from the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was a part of this, but so are the bigger and creative level designs from the Galaxy games. And there are plenty of smaller references too, such as the collectible green stars that Galaxy series first introduced.
